The country’s first 3D printed post office has now come up in Bengaluru. This post office built with a robot printer using 3D printing technology was inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on 19 th August 2023, Friday.

This new construction technology was carried out through 3D-concrete printing technology, which is a fully automated building construction technology wherein a robotic printer deposits the concrete layer-by-layer as per the approved design and special grade concrete that hardens quickly is used to ensure bonding between the layers to print the structure.

This post office building is spread over an area of 1,021 square feet, is located in the Cambridge Layout of the city and will be functional following the inauguration. The construction project was completed within 45 days, however if it was carried in the traditional way it would have taken six to eight months for completion.

According to the postal officials, the construction was carried out by the construction company Larsen and Toubro Limited and IIT Madras helped in the structural design of this post office. The officials added, Cost and time savings 3D concrete printing technology a viable alternative to conventional building practises.

Union Minister Vaishnaw told the reporters, "Having a 3D-printed concrete building constructed on site is a great initiative. This is a technology demonstrator. IIT Madras has done fabulous work on this. When this technology will become mainstream, we will see more such initiatives on taking this technology forward."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, posted on X, ̎Every countryman will be proud to see India’s first 3D printed post office in Cambridge Layout, Bengaluru. It is a testament to nation’s innovation and progress and also symbolizes Atmanirbhar India. Congratulations to those who worked hard to make the post office complete ̎.

According to the reports, 3D printing is a computer-generated design. In which the concrete deposits layer-by-layer. Three-dimensional object is created from a digital file. 3D concrete printing is an emergent solid technology to transform construction practice by accelerating the manufacturing process, using robotic printers and enhancing building quality using 3D printing technology. ∎
